Kidz Express

BCM has provided financial support to Kidz Express for over 10 years and is one of its longest standing contributors. Individual attorneys at BCM have also provided assistance, both monetarily and in kind. Partner Valerie J. Peiler serves as the Secretary/Treasurer of the Board of Directors.

Kidz Express is a 501c3 charity that provides out-of-school programming to children ages 5 to 14 as well as a jobs program for youth ages 14 to 21. Kidz Express operates an after school program during the school year and a summer day camp program during the summer break. The goal of the program is have our children remain with us as they grow up, and therefore as they reach young adulthood, they become part of the Kidz Express staff, planning and supervising activities for the younger children. Our system of progression from child participant to staff participant allows us to provide a decade or more of support and mentorship to children living in one of the most challenging urban environment in the U.S. Kidz Express facility is located in the South Austin neighborhood. The Austin neighborhood records more murders each year than any other neighborhood.

Super Jack’s 5K

Super Jack’s 5K

On June 10, 2017, Brady, Connolly & Masuda participated in the Lurie’s “Move for the Kids 5K Walk/Run,” on behalf of Jack Rubino, son of Nicholas A. Rubino, one of our litigation associate attorneys.

The Lurie’s “Move for the Kids 5K Walk/Run” has occurred every summer since 2005, and benefits the general hospital fund. Over that time, nearly four million dollars has been raised to support re-building the hospital, recruiting the best pediatric physicians in the world, funding research advances, and funding the transition to home program for patients.

While the race benefits the hospital generally, BC&M participated to sponsor one of their own. Jack Rubino was born with anophthalmia and a Peter’s anomaly, which is a rare genetic condition affecting his vision. Jack spent many days, and nights, of his early childhood at Lurie’s Hospital in Chicago, and his parents wanted to find a way to give back and say thank you.

Between Jack’s Family and BC&M over 50 people came together to run and walk on Jack’s behalf and to support the hospital. Shirts were made to commemorate the event and remind everyone of how strong Jack has been his whole life. The shirts show Jack (and his only one eye) as the superhero he has been since birth.

The whole office had a great time supporting Jack, bonding with one another outside of the office, and (for those who actually ran) getting some exercise. Jack’s family was humbled and thankful for all the support.
